AZ 86 Shield

AZ 86

State Route 86, similarly to SR 84, was also a shortcut to the loops of US 80 to get from Las Cruces, NM to San Diego, CA. The eastern portion of SR 86 was replaced with I-10. Now, SR 86 just runs from Why to Tucson.

Length: 118 miles
Existed since: 1930
Current Route: AZ 85 in Why to I-19 in Tucson
Historical Route: Why to New Mexico state line near Lordsburg, NM
Major Junctions: AZ 85, AZ 386, AZ 286, I-19

Cool Features

Why's name derived from the Y intersection that used to exist for SR 85 and 86. The intersection is just a T intersection now.

SR 86 used to extend to BL 19 in Tucson, but that was decertified in 2003, so SR 86 was cut back to I-19.
