State Route 179 is the main route that takes traffic from Phoenix and I-17 to Sedona.

SR 179 is designated as the Red Rock Scenic Road, with many scenic views along its route.
SR 179 was originally designated as a connection between SR 79 (now 89A) and SR 69 in Prescott Valley. By 1960, the SR 179 designation was moved to the current route. The original proposed route is now an unmarked spur of SR 89A.
